Running to Remember

Earlier this year, Steven Baker, our Executive Headteacher, started long distance running to raise awareness of the 25th anniversary of the Bosnian genocide. He ran every day in all weathers, fitting this in with his other daily commitments.

Coronavirus hampered Steve’s planned visit to Bosnia in May half term when he was due to lead a delegation to Srebrenica. More than 8,000 Muslim men and boys were murdered there in July 1995 and Steve had planned to run down Sarajevo’s notorious “Sniper’s Alley”.

However, Steve kept on running every day and also motivated other people to run or walk 70km,  which is the distance the victims had to flee from Srebrenica and is known as the “Death March”.

Steve is still running to remember those who lost their lives, and on 29th November he made it to 1,750km, over 1000 miles!

Steve was recently presented with an award by Lord Bourne for his ‘outstanding contributions to tackling hatred and building a better society’, and in October he was awarded an OBE for services to education.
